Supervised injection sites coming to Edmonton
There are currently four supervised injection sites proposed for Edmonton.
These are facilities where people will be able to legally inject illicit drugs.
This includes a supervised injection site in our riding of Edmonton Griesbach at the Boyle McCauley Health Centre.
I recently hosted a town hall meeting about these sites.
I appreciate everyone who has already taken the time to share their views with me on this serious topic.
Everyone wants to respond compassionately to those struggling with drug addictions.
Any exemption granted to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act – which would allow a supervised injection site to operate – must be done to improve the health and safety of our community.
The application process must include input from health officials, law enforcement, community leaders and members of the public.
Viewpoints on these facilities differ but it’s clear that there's a need for more consultation with all stakeholders.
The Liberal government promised a thorough consultation process. Yet I’ve heard from many of you that felt they haven’t been given the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the process.
If you’d like to voice your support or opposition to the four supervised injection sites proposed in Edmonton, write the federal Minister of Health Jane Philpott and copy me on your note.
She is responsible for granting federal exemption under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act that will allow these sites to operate. Here’s her contact information:
