Our border with the United States will remain closed to non-essential travel until at least October 21, 2020.

Have your say on talk show controversy

I’m interested in your opinion on this issue.

Recently 630 CHED talk show host Ryan Jespersen went on the air to call fiscal conservative city councillor Mike Nickel “a joke,” and said the folks doing Mike’s social media postings were “chimpanzees.”

Those two folks are visible minorities. Nickel complained and Jespersen later apologized on air.

After that, Nickel says a member of the public corresponded with Jespersen via text message and Jespersen once again used the chimpanzee insult depicting a primate with a typewriter.

On Twitter, Nickel wrote: “I thought the matter closed after the apology … A citizen has come forward with private text messages they had with Mr. Jespersen, after the apology, showing the derogatory insult still being used. @630CHED sponsors and listeners must demand immediate change.”

I’m interested in your feedback. Should 630 CHED cancel the Ryan Jespersen show as Nickel suggests or should everyone just let bygones be bygones?

Imagine if the government had shut borders earlier

By LICIA CORBELLA
Calgary Herald

“The reason we needed to spend so much to rescue the incomes of Canadians and their businesses is because the Liberals ignored military intelligence and let thousands of people come here from China after we knew there was a pandemic there, including 2,000 people from the most infected region of China,” points out Poilievre, the finance critic for the Opposition Conservatives in this minority Parliament.

“So if that didn’t happen, we would be like Taiwan, which has had, I think, seven deaths and they haven’t had to lock down their economy. They closed their borders rather than closing their economy,” he says. Taiwan, with a population of 23.8 million people, has, indeed, only had seven deaths from the coronavirus for a rate of just 0.3 per million citizens.

By contrast, Canada, with a population of 37.8 million has had 9,205 deaths or 243 deaths per million population.

The CBC revealed in April that the Trudeau government had received military intelligence in early January showing that there was a viral outbreak in China that was a real risk to Canada. Clearly, that intelligence was ignored.

Poilievre can be seen in a YouTube video, that has been viewed 1.8 million times, questioning Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland on whether she and the Liberal cabinet saw that military intelligence and she repeatedly refused to answer.

It’s clear that the Liberals failed to prepare Canada for COVID-19

Liberal Health Minister Patty Hajdu has claimed that she was fully briefed about the dangers COVID-19 posed to Canada as early as December.

Yet, despite the grave threat she waited three whole months before taking any action!

Acting during those crucial early months could’ve saved countless lives. Instead that time was wasted!

Despite knowing the danger, the Liberals were claiming that the risks of COVID-19 were low up until March 15.

In early February when we Conservatives were calling for the border to be closed to affected areas — as other countries were doing — the Liberals refused.

Hajdu said on February 17: “The long-term implications of shutting down borders is they’re not very effective at controlling disease. In fact, they’re not very effective at all.” It was even claimed that closing borders to COVID-19 hotspots was racist.

It wasn’t till March 16 that the Liberals did a U-turn and finally closed our borders to international travel.

This was a crucial step, but it should’ve been taken sooner.

The Liberal failure to act is even more shocking when it’s clear they were briefed about the danger of COVID-19.

The Canadian Military briefed the government on January 17 and allied intelligence had clearly indicated the severity of the threat.

There have also been reports from current and former staff of Health Canada who’ve said experienced scientists’ voices weren’t being heard in first few weeks of the outbreak. To make matters worse the Liberals in May 2019 had even canceled the program that was designed to gather intelligence and provide early warning of global pandemics.

Evidence shows that countries that took the risks seriously from the get-go — like Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand — have had dramatically better outcomes than countries that failed to act early.

If only our government had done the same.

Green activists slam Trudeau’s renewable energy plan

By DAVID STAPLES
Edmonton Journal

It’s no surprise to see conservatives upset about Justin Trudeau’s new “Just Recovery” plan to spend mega-billions on green energy.

After all, the plan will plunge a country already drowning in debt so deep that we’ll likely smash our head on the bottom of the pool.

Trudeau’s green dream scheme is getting major input from Gerald Butts and Bruce Lourie, two of the same green gurus who more than a decade ago helped concoct a costly Ontario solar and wind energy build. That scheme, according to Ontario’s auditor general, led to more frequent power outages, doubled consumer electricity prices in one decade, and will add an extra $170 billion for Ontario electricity consumers by 2032.

Conservatives stake their honour on looking out for taxpayers and fighting for business efficiency, so it’s little wonder they shudder at the thought of what Trudeau might now offer up.

But green and social justice advocates, such as director Jeff Gibbs and producer Ozzie Zehner of Planet of the Humans, the popular documentary on hidden environmental costs of solar, wind and biofuels, also have doubts, though of a different kind, about Trudeau’s plan.

Serving constituents is key to the job of an MP

Serving our local communities is paramount to me as the Member of Parliament for Edmonton Griesbach. Check out our video produced by our constituency office assistant Josh Hui:

I spoke at a pro-democracy rally in support of the Belarus freedom movement

I was honoured to speak outside the Alberta Legislature for a rally supporting people in Belarus fighting for freedom against a corrupt and brutal dictatorship.

Vandals desecrate the memorial for a fallen police officer

Just this summer I attended a touching memorial for Const. Ezio Farone at this memorial park. He was killed in the line of duty three decades ago. This is a window into the types of radicals who are successfully pushing politicians to defund our police. In the riding I represent, Edmonton Griesbach, folks want more police officers, not fewer. I hope the person responsible for this desecration is arrested, charged and convicted. Anyone with information or dashcam video from that night is asked to contact police using the non-emergency line at 780-423-4567 or by dialing #377 from a cell phone.

Independent Parliamentary Budget Officer call Liberals spending “unsustainable”

By AMANDA CONNOLLY
Global News

The federal government has no more than one or two years to rein in the hundreds of billions of dollars in deficits it is wracking up through coronavirus spending, or risk the debt being “unsustainable.”

That’s according to parliamentary budget officer Yves Giroux, who spoke with The West Block‘s Mercedes Stephenson about the federal government’s spending ahead of a throne speech on Sept. 23, which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said will pitch “ambitious” new programs.

“It’s without a doubt that we cannot afford deficits of over $300 billion for more than just a few years,” said Giroux. “And when I say a few years, I really mean a year or two. Beyond that, it would become unsustainable.

“So if the government has plans for additional spending, it will clearly have to make difficult choices and either raise taxes or reduce other areas of spending. Because it’s clear that we cannot afford to have deficits of that magnitude for even the medium term.”

Get to know Erin O’Toole

I’ve known Erin O’Toole for several years.

He’s a strong defender of Canadian interests.

Whether serving Canada in uniform or as a Member of Parliament he’s dedicated his life work to make Canada the best it can be.

On the tough questions of the day, Erin has been at the forefront. He has launched a detailed platform where he highlights his Conservative vision to take Canada back from Justin Trudeau and his corrupt Liberals.

I’ve also had the pleasure to know Erin as a friend.

He’s a thoroughly decent man who takes his integrity and duty seriously.

Considering the endless string of scandals plaguing the highest levels of the Liberal government, Canada needs someone with integrity.

Vandals behead statue of our first prime minister

Without Sir. John A. Macdonald there’d be no Canada.

It was his vision that united the colonies of British North America into the dominion of Canada and his vision that saw that young nation stretch from sea-to-sea.

Canada isn’t perfect. Nor was Macdonald.

But Canada is the best country in the world to live in. A place where people from all walks of life have the opportunity to thrive and succeed in a free society.

That’s a legacy everyone can be proud of as we work together to make Canada even better.

Green dreams of Trudeau and Freeland

EDITORIAL
Toronto Sun

Since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland promise to make Canada’s energy supply green and decarbonized as we recover from the COVID-19 economic recession, here’s a simple question for them.

How do they plan to provide Canadians with the enormous amounts of energy we will need to recover from the pandemic-induced global recession, while simultaneously replacing our traditional energy sources with expensive, inefficient and unreliable wind and solar power?

Unless, that is, they plan to inflict the equivalent of a COVID-19 recession on Canadians every year for the next decade.

Because that’s what will be necessary to meet Trudeau’s commitment to the United Nations to reduce Canada’s industrial greenhouse gas emissions linked to climate change to 30% below 2005 levels by 2030.

The reality is the only thing that has ever significantly reduced Canada’s emissions, and even that was temporary, is a major global recession.

Last week’s straw poll results

Last week I asked folks if they were worried about the massive debt load the Liberals are leaving for future Canadians?

People overwhelmingly said they were worried.

See the results below.

A healthy democracy relies on an independent press, free of political influence. Trudeau’s Liberals are giving $600 million of taxpayers’ money to “approved media.” Many critics have noted that having the government subsidize the media undermines the independence of the media, a key attribute of a free society.

Do you support spending $600 million dollars of taxpayers’ money to subsidize “approved” media?

Have your say in my new unofficial poll. I’ll publish the results in next week’s e-newsletter.
